Recent FMS/GPS Installations

Garmin GNS-530 -Sikorsky S76A. FSI @ West Palm Beach, FL

- Sim manufacturer: Reflectone , Host computer: Harris upgraded to PC with Lynx OS.

Garmin GNS-530 -Sikorsky S76B. FSI @ West Palm Beach , FL

- Sim manufacturer: FSI, Host computer: PDP-11 upgraded to PC Osprey with Win NT.

Garmin GNS-530 -Sikorsky S76C. FSI @ West Palm Beach, FL

- Sim manufacturer: FSI, Host computer: Harris Nighthawk.

The GNS-530 is an impressive GPS based FMS system. The integrated moving map display uses an internal database to show geographic features, nav aids, airports, and other useful information. The system has integrated COM and NAV radios, making for interesting challenges in flight simulator installations.

Universal UNS-1F FMS/GPS Upgrade (from 1B) - Dash 8 Wideroe , Norway (FSI)

The UNS1 upgrade integrations often require updates to ARINC 429 bus content and vertical capabilities of the auto-pilot and flight director.

Dual Universal UNS-1C FMS/GPS Installation - Dash 8 Q400 (FSI)

This installation uses a PC to generate satellite constellation information and communicate this information to the FMS's via ARINC 429 signals. The UNS-1Cs were integrated with the auto-pilot and flight director. The system accommodates non-precision approaches, but the UNS-1C does not accommodate VNAV in the Q400. The system is designed such that the simulator may also run with the Global Star FMS that was installed in the simulator prior to this installation.

Universal UNS-1C GPS/FMS/GPS Installation - Dash 8-100/300 (FSI)

This installation also uses a PC to generate satellite constellation information and communicate this information to the FMS via ARINC 429 signals. The installation was implemented such that reversion to the previously installed UNS-1B may be carried out in less than 20 minutes. This modification is compatible with both EFIS and electromechanical cockpit configurations.

Universal UNS-1C GPS/FMS/GPS Installation - Dash 8-100/300 (FSI)

This installation also uses a satellite constellation PC. It was implemented such that reversion to the previously installed KNS-660 may be carried out in less than 20 minutes.

GPS based Flight Management System Installation (UNS-1M) - ATR-42 (CAE)

This interesting installation uses a simulation of an external GPS processor to simulate GPS functionality. The system supports entire flight plans, as any other FMS would do, however it also allows for non-precision approaches using the Universal Avionics "Pseudo-ILS" concept. While the system is in enroute mode, cockpit indications are passed to the EFIS system via standard ARINC-429. However during approach, the Pseudo-ILS system requires that lateral and vertical deviations from the GPS be switched into the auto-pilot ILS deviation inputs when the UNS-1M signals that it is ready to bring the aircraft in down the glideslope . This technique allows the existing auto-pilot to use its algorithms to bring the aircraft in on a GPS non-precision approach.
